The Cain family from Consett have raised a whopping £850 for the youth centre after a fundraising evening at the Wheatsheaf pub in Consett last week. Fr Mark and Sister Therese were on hand to say thanks for their generosity.
The family started booking the youth centre for get-togethers after coming to an open day about three years ago.
“We just love it,” says entertainer-in-chief Tonia, who was the brains behind the recent fundraiser. “There are usually between 15 and 17 of us and we make our own entertainment. We couldn’t make it at Christmas, so in January we got together and did the whole Christmas thing – dressing up as Santa and the elves, table set and everything!”
They’re due up again next month to celebrate a 60th birthday. “This time there’s a musical theme. Everyone has to come as a character in a musical and sing a song.”
In addition to the money raised, they are donating six picnic tables rescued from a local pub which they’ve stripped, sanded and revarnished along with three umbrellas and a new stainless steel barbeque to replace the rather aged one we currently have.
And it seems Tonia isn’t stopping there, “I’d like to do a toasty and roastie night (with toasted sandwiches and roast potatoes) with raffles and stand up bingo.”
