Fifty years ago, Minsteracres opened it’s newly converted stables block as a retreat house, thanks in huge part to men from Consett who gave their time free over the course of three years providing the labour and skills. Over the years, we have seen many of those men and their children visit to see how their work is standing up.

We’re about to start a fundraising programme to refurbish the retreat house (it’s fair to say that 50 years on it looks a bit tired and dated!). We’re launching a fundraising appeal at our open house on bank holiday Monday, 4th May, and would love to see some of those original contributors there.
If you could let us know in advance you were coming, that would be even better! Contact Nuala, our communications manager, by e mail at, or call her on 01434 673248.
Everyone is welcome to the open house. Entry is free and it will run from 11am to 4pm.
