The Church of St Elizabeth, Minsteracres, DH8 9RT
The church of St. Elizabeth evolved since the very earliest days of the Silvertop presence. The Minsteracres Mission started in 1765 and developed to what it is now: a vital and vibrant faith community with active participation in the liturgy and other dimensions of parish life. The Parishioners try to be a living sign of the Kingdom of God in this part of the world. There are a variety of groups for justice and peace, music and liturgy, and journey of faith.
The community worships in St. Elizabeth's Church. This beautiful building was consecrated in 1854 and dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. This saint lived in the early 13th century and was well-known for her dedication to the poor of the area in which she lived. Saint Elizabeth was the patron saint of Eliza Stoner, the wife of Henry Charles Silvertop, who built the church.
The interior of the church retains most of its initial fixtures and decoration including stained glass windows, stations of the cross and a beautiful statue of Our Lady made of Carrera marble. The ceiling contains the coat of arms for the Silvertop and related families.
