In August we welcomed parishioners from St. Helens from their annual holiday retreat. Margaret Marren, the organiser, remembered that the first retreat took place in 1989. It was the time when many members of the Sutton parish of St. Anne and Blessed Dominic didn’t have the means to go on holiday. Fr. Mark White, who was the Parish Priest at the time, organised a trip to Minsteracres. This break became a mixture of holiday and retreat and has taken place every year since.
Margaret has come every year and in recent years has been the organiser. Over the years she has also proved to be a great fundraiser, starting the fund which enabled us to build the desperately needed lift in the Retreat House, a couple of years ago.
Two photographs commemorate the 30th visit of the St. Helens group. One shows Margaret Marren (left) and Maureen Young during a trip to Mary Queen of Scots in Jedburgh in 1989. The other reflects the enduring friendship of Margaret and Maureen and was taken during this year’s visit. May it be given to them to make the journey to Minsteracres many more times!
